Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) received a call from a Hawaii State Department of Health official about a man who was injured in a 3:45 a.m. head-on car accident on Maui. A Coast Guard C-130 long-range search aircraft crew from Air Station Barbers Point was en route to Kahului International Airport with a Disaster Medical Assist Team (DMAT) at 6:15 a.m. to pick up the man. The crew returned to Honolulu International Airport, where City and County of Honolulu Emergency Medical Services personnel transferred him to an ambulance at 8:15 a.m. The car accident victim was then transported to The Queen’s Medical Center. The inter-island rescue effort was coordinated between a Coast Guard flight surgeon, a Hawaii State Department of Health doctor and JRCC watch standers.
The condition of the victim is not known at this time but the Coast Guard and the Department of Health deserve kudos for prompt action to save lives in these emergencies.
