The Dole Food Co. is recalling bagged lettuce because a sample was found to contain E. coli on Monday, September 17. So far there have not been any illnesses reported to the company.
The voluntary recall affects all packages of Dole’s Hearts Delight salad mix sold in the United States and Canada with a “best if used by” date of September 19, 2007, and a production code of “A24924A” or “A24924B,” Dole said.
The blend of lettuces were grown at the Springfield, Ohio pant on September 6. In the United States 755 cases were distributed, which included 4,530 bags. The product was also sold in Canada.
The company decided on the recall after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency warned consumers not to eat the Hearts Delight lettuce. The FDA has addresses the company about the situation.
Dole warns not to eat the lettuce even if it seems to be fresh. E. coli infected food may not smell or look spoiled. Symptoms of those ill from E. coli include diarrhea and abdominal cramps and will last from 5 to 10 days. Antibiotics are usually effective in treatment.
