As reported on KGMB Hawai‘i NEWS NOW on Thursday, April 13th, “Target issues voluntary recall of water absorbing Easter toys”. Hawai‘i residents who purchased “Hatch & Grow Easter Eggs”, “Hatch Your Own Dino Egg” or “Easter Grow Toys” at Target stores in the Islands should know about the risk to children from choking and swallowing associated with these products, and look into the recall of 560,000 of those toys by Target. These products are water absorbing and according to the Consumer Product
Safety Commission (CPSC) Recall Notice alert:
[I]f the toy is ingested, it can expand inside a child’s body and cause intestinal obstructions, resulting in severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration and could be life threatening. Surgery is required to remove the toy from the body, if ingested. Medical professionals and parents should be aware that there is a possibility that the toys might not show up on an x-ray.
They were sold in Target stores between February and March 2017. As reported in Fortune Magazine by Lucinda Shen:
According to the packaging, the small toys can “grow up to 600% its original size” when placed in water. But if the small toy is ingested, it can expand inside a child’s body and cause intestinal obstructions, the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s said in a statement. “Surgery is required to remove the toy from the body, if ingested.”
