Berko Electric of Peru, Indiana, in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of the company’s toe-space heaters, catalog number TS, TS-1, and TS-1A because of a serious fire hazard.  Berko Electric is now known as Marley Engineered Products of Bennettsville, South Carolina.

The heaters were also distributed under the name Emerson Electric “Chromalux Comfort Heating” and “Environmental Products”, catalog number KSH2000.  There have been 29 incidents of fire reported thus far because of the space heaters.  The fan inside the unit stops working, but the heater stays on, which causes the unit to ignite.

The recall involves electric toe-space heaters sold from Berko between 1972 and February 1985, and from Emerson Electric wholesale distributors from 1980 through February 1985 for between $70 and $170.
