As reported on KGMB Hawai‘i NEWS NOW on Thursday, April 13th, “Target issues voluntary recall of water absorbing Easter toys”. Hawai‘i residents who purchased “Hatch & Grow Easter Eggs”, “Hatch Your Own Dino Egg” or “Easter Grow Toys” at Target stores in the Islands should know about the risk to children from choking and swallowing associated with these products, and look into the recall of 560,000 of those toys by Target. These products are water absorbing and according to the Consumer Product

Safety Commission (CPSC) Recall Notice alert:

[I]f the toy is ingested, it can expand inside a child’s body and cause intestinal obstructions, resulting in severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration and could be life threatening. Surgery is required to remove the toy from the body, if ingested. Medical professionals and parents should be aware that there is a possibility that the toys might not show up on an x-ray.

They were sold in Target stores between February and March 2017. As reported in Fortune Magazine by Lucinda Shen:

According to the packaging, the small toys can “grow up to 600% its original size” when placed in water. But if the small toy is ingested, it can expand inside a child’s body and cause intestinal obstructions, the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s said in a statement. “Surgery is required to remove the toy from the body, if ingested.”

Any purchaser of one of these toys should keep them away from children. Hopefully no one in Hawai‘i has been hurt by these toys. If a child was injured by a toy, you should carefully save the toy, its container and any sales receipts or other paperwork that came with the toy, and contact an Hawai‘i  lawyer to advise you about what steps you need to take to get optimal medical care for the child and to protect your rights. Calling the store or contacting Target about an injured child may hurt your chances of being fairly treated and compensated for injuries. First learn your rights from a lawyer who cares about you, not a company representative who wants to protect Target.

If the product caused no injury, you can call Target at 800- 440-0680 between 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT Monday through Sunday, online at www.target.com and click on “Recalls” at the bottom of the page, then on “School/Stationery/Seasonal” for more information, or the “Product Recalls” tab on Target’s Facebook page.

The law covers products like these: Small Parts Regulations 16 C.F.R. 1501 et. al

Hawai‘i residents who have questions about these or other defective products can call Wayne Parsons Law Office to speak with Wayne Parsons.
